After being defeated 3-1 away to Rooftop in their last league fixture, 4TH Newtownabbey put up a better show offensively scoring 6, but couldn’t progress into the next round as defensibly they couldn’t cope with an impressive Rooftop forward line. The game however was marred by an unfortunate injury to the Shore Road outfits right back which saw play held up by 20 minutes and the player whisked to hospital by ambulance. The game saw 4TH race into a well deserved 2 goal lead with a ‘Mark Hughes’ type volley from MacAuley followed by an own goal. The visitors stunned 4TH by scoring 4 goals in the space of 15 minutes to put them 4-2 ahead before the half, the nippy number 9 in unstoppable form. H.T 2-4 Dickson’s team talk must have sparked some life back into the Carnmoney side as they bombarded their rivals defence and goalie with wave of attacks. Gilmore’s movement up front was causing panic and when Trimble’s header found the roof of the net, it was Rooftop who were on the ropes. Hadn’t it been for the visitors on form striker, Newtownabbey probably would have won this tie, but as it was, if he wasn’t creating goals he was scoring them, adding two more to his tally making it 6 for his team. To their credit though, 4Th battled back and when Trimble’s volley found the net, the comeback was on. There were chances for Gilmore and Scourfield before play was halted, but on the re-start Trimble completed his hat-rick with another header to make it 5-6. It looked like the game was edging towards a 4TH victory, only for Rooftop to seal the win with a breakaway goal. This ended Newtownabbey’s resistance however Gilmore was to round off the days scoring by volleying in a thunderbolt from 20 yards. It’s back to the league for 4Th, who travel to Newtownbreda looking to climb the league in 2009. Team:-King, McMahon, McNeilly, Gordon, Lane, MacAuley, Scourfield, Donnelly, N. Harvey, Gilmore, Trimble. Subs: - Murphy, Tumilty ************************************* 4th C 2-4 Elim YM
