4TH A Claim Vital Victory

4th Newtownabbey came away from this tricky encounter from Four Winds with all 3 points in Saturday’s 2B clash with Newtownbreda. Manager Brian Dickson had rung the changes in defence after conceding 7 against rooftop the previous week, seeing Alan Cochrane and Simon Lawson drafted in. In blustery and cold conditions, Newtownabbey dominated the early stages and deservedly went a goal ahead when Trimble volleyed in a Donnelly headed knockdown. Despite the wind against them, they looked in complete control and could have doubled their lead only for Donnelly’s 20 yard effort being superbly tipped wide by the Breda keeper. N. Harvey also came close to opening his account for the season but couldn’t squeeze his shot past the goalie. With 10 minutes remaining Breda had their best spell of pressure and indeed made it count, firing in 2 goals to shock the visitors. It could have been worse had King not made a great save to deny the forwards goal bound effort. H.T 2-1

The second half saw 4Th camp inside Breda’s box for the majority of play. With the wind in their favor, they were breaching the hosts defence with ease. After Macauley and Gilmore had gone close, it looked as it wasn’t to be 4TH’s day as Donnelly saw his header crash off the underside of the bar. However from a flurry of corners and long throws, Macaulay was able to swivel inside the six yard box and bring the teams level. There now only looked to be one winner and after Scourfield had put through winger Macaulay, he unselfishly played in Trimble who did the needful and claim his 2nd goal of the game. Trimble almost claimed his hat-rick after he saw his shot clatter the post when put through by Gilmore. Newtownabbey did come under some pressure towards the end of the game but were able to defend superbly and see out the remainder of the game to deservedly pick up their 1st win of 2009.
