4th A claim second win on the trot

Dromore Amateurs 1-2 4th A

2009 has started well for Brian Dickson and 4TH Newtownabbey O.B as they have won 2 matches out of 2, both which were tricky fixtures. Following up a victory against Newtownbreda a week earlier, the Carnmoney side travelled to Dromore to play in what was treacherous conditions. It was 4Th however that dealt better with the gales, and this enabled them to claim a well deserved 2nd consecutive win. They had the wind in the first half, which saw Dromore pinned in their box for most of the opening stages, with the host’s custodian pulling off saves from Harvey and Cochrane’s long range efforts. The Co Down side didn’t do themselves any favours as they opted for long balls most of the time, which saw the ball come straight back to them via the heavy gusts. Newtownabbey found the breakthrough when a series of one twos between MacAuley and Gilmore saw the winger square the ball for forward Trimble to score. Youngster Darren Craig who had been brought in to play left wing had been lively throughout the half, and it was he who doubled 4TH’s lead when he saw his in swinging corner curl straight in past the keeper. H.T 0-2

Dromore started the 2nd period just as 4Th started the match, forcing their opponents on the back foot. In what was described in Dickson’s post match comments as ‘heroic defending’, the visitor’s backline were rock solid, closing down the strikers and throwing themselves in front of shots. With Trimble dropping into a more defensive role due to the wind, Gilmore fantastically lead the front line, able to hold the ball up buying time for his team mates to re-shape. Sustained attacks from Dromore saw King remarkably tip over two top corner bound shots; however the visitors were able to create chances of their own, playing decent football in impossible footballing conditions. They did what Dromore couldn’t do in the 1st half and keep the ball on the floor, and this saw a beautifully crafted move involving Lawson and MacAuley set Gilmore free, who pulled the ball back for Cochrane whose shot was saved by the keeper. Another welcome sight saw midfielder Kennedy return as a sub after a long layoff through injury, and he was able to run the clock down with his usual mazy runs. The home side brought off their main target main threat, as Gordon and McNeilly had dealt with him superbly, although King was eventually beaten in the dying minutes when a cross viciously was brought in via the wind. Newtownabbey move up to 7th in the league position and with no match next week, have a well earned rest after the phenomenal defending.
