Kilroot Power Past 4TH

4th A 0-3 Kilroot Rec

2009 had started well for 4TH Newtownabbey with three wins in a row easing their relegation worries albeit temporary, as a cluster of teams hover around the dreaded drop zone. Dickson went into this derby match with a somewhat weakened team, Cochrane, McNeilly, MacAuley, Donnelly, just some of the regulars all missing from the starting eleven. They should have had enough in their locker however to mount a more stern challenge to their fellow 2B counterparts Kilroot, who are also languishing in the wrong end of the division. The game did start brightly for the home side who had the majority of the possession and a few efforts on goal, but it was the Carrick side who against the run of play opened the scoring when new signing Davies’ finely timed tackle fortuitously ricochet off the forward beating King. A bitter blow for 4Th became worse as the referee blew for a penalty against King who seemed to punch the ball to safety from a set play, only for the official to spot a foul by the shot stopper. The resulting spot kick was expertly dispatched into the bottom corner to bring the score 0-2. H.T

Newtownabbey improved slightly in the second half but as time wore on; their 100% record in the New Year looked less likely to be maintained. Kennedy who had started in the centre came into life and from his pass Darren Craig saw his effort sneak wide when one on one with the Rec custodian. With time running out and both teams on the attack the next goal was crucial, and it was Kilroot who sealed the victory with a well placed shot low into the bottom corner. Trimble should have notched a consolation when his header was cleared off the line from a Donnelly long throw; however this was to be the final action in what was a well deserved victory for Kilroot. 4TH Newtownabbey looked the shadow of the side that have put together the fine run of form of late, lacking their usual bite and spirit that saw them climb away from the zone. With a trip to their old rivals Wesley in Lisburn next week whom they defeated two weeks ago, they would need to see a dramatic return to form to avoid a similar scoreline in this clash.

Team:- King, Cullen, Davies, Gordon, Lane, Craig, Scourfield, N. Harvey, Kennedy, Gilmore, Trimble.

Subs:- Lawson, Donnelly, C. Kennedy.
