2 great wins
Wesley 0-3 4th A Wallace Park in Lisburn saw possibly the best performance this season so far from 4TH Newtownabbey as they cruised past 2B strugglers Wesley. Having been well beaten the previous week by rivals Kilroot, Brian Dickson was eager to see the response of his players as he mostly kept the same lineup. With Cullen switched to right back, new signing Davis absent through illness, there was a debut given to another new signing Stuart McCrea, also the defence was bolstered by the return of Alan Cochrane. Newtownabbey carved the usual stubborn Wesley backline open with ease from the off and after Scourfield had gone close with a header, it was the superb M Gordan who broke the deadlock, thrashing a volley into the top corner. With 4TH’s defenders standing firm against the Lisburn outfits dangerous strikers, this enabled Donnelly and Kennedy to pull the strings in the midfield and the writing was on the wall when chance after chance fell to Abbey’s front men. After youngster Craig’s looping volley cleared the post by millimeters, the game really should have been dead and buried by half time. On another day, forward Trimble could have had a hatrick, having hit the post with a header, he then saw a shot saved by the keeper and having run half the pitch and rounding the goalie, was unable to slot in from a difficult angle. H.T 0-1 Wesley opened the 2nd period with a 10 minute spell of pressure, however the Old Boys were able to soak it up and it was back to business as wave after wave of attacks rained down on the hosts. The second killer goal came from a fantastic move seeing Trimble play the ball wide to Darren Craig who’s pin point cross was met by striker Gimore, who rose like a salmon to place a wonderful header into the top corner. With Kennedy looking back to his best after injury, Wesley were unable to cope with the sheer pace from the winger and when he set up Donnelly who coolly lobbed in to make it 3-0, the game was over. Things got worse for the home team as tempers flared, seeing a flurry of yellow cards and one red for dissent. A fine performance against a usual stern Wesley side is followed up with a huge test against league leaders Iveagh at Sixmile Leisure Centre next week and Brian Dickson will be looking for more of the same from his players. ***************************************** 4TH B 1-0 Albion Star B
