4TH A 2-2 Iveagh Utd

4TH Newtownabbey kept up their fine form in 2009 collecting another valuable point in their quest to survive in their return to 2B. However despite being the underdogs before the game, it was they who maybe will feel the more disappointed as they slightly edged this fixture against their West Belfast opponents. There were two changes from the convincing win at Wallace Park the previous week, Davis and N. Harvey returning to the backline with Cochrane switched to midfield. Title favorites Iveagh took the game by the scruff of the neck and had Newtownabbey pinned back in the opening ten minutes. Keeper King made a fine save to deny the forward who was one on one. Indeed in a goal less first half, that was to be Utd’s best chance and it was the Old Boys who should have went into the interval a couple of goals up with Trimble seeing his two goal bound efforts cleared off the line in succession and Gilmore having a shot well saved. Chris Donnelly also saw his header from a corner somehow tipped over the bar but the scoreline at H.T 0-0

The second period saw a very open game with plenty of goal mouth action, and with Abbey’s defence having been solid thus far, a mix up at the back saw the grateful forward put the visitors 1-0 up. The response from 4Th couldn’t have been better and after the keeper again denied Trimble, it was a cracking volley from strike partner Gilmore to level up the scores. The visitors were in disarray as chances came thick and fast and after Cochrane had gone close with a blistering 25 yard drive it looked only a matter of time before the second came. From a couple of dangerously whipped in corners from Scourfield, Gordan who had scored the week earlier was causing all sorts of mayhem, and it was from a long throw he put his side 2-1 ahead from a bullet header. Iveagh did then show why they are at the summit playing some nice touches, one which saw a fantastic move carve open Newtownabbey’s defence and bring the scores to two a piece. With the game in the balance and ten minutes left on the clock, Abbey were dealt a blow when Davis who had been impressive at the back was shown a straight red card for dissent. Although a man down, 4TH’s defence stood firm and were able to see the remainder of the game out. A satisfying result is followed up with a trip to Queens 2ND’s next week which always proves to be a tough task.
