Good day all round
Queens 2ND’s 4-4 4TH A The Dub’s new 3G pitch was the venue for in form side 4TH Newtownabbey on a rainy blustery Saturday afternoon, which saw plenty of goals for the spectators. Dickson’s side saw a few changes with some of his current regulars absent, but was still able to field a strong side that also welcomed back the winger Macauley who had been out though injury. With the previous meeting between the sides ending in a hard fought out 2-2 draw, Abbey were a tad fortunate this time around as Queens may feel they deserved the full 3 points. The visitors did take the game to the University side in the opening stages and drew first blood; stand in skipper Donnelly seeing his fierce 25 yard drive rattles in off the post. Their joy was short lived though as after 4Th striker Gilmore had a fine curling effort saved, the 2ND’s clicked into gear and at times opened up their opponents with ease playing some fantastic football. With King absent from goal, the ever reliable Derek Dempster was the man between the posts keeping out the frustrated strikers with some marvelous saves. However he was unable to keep out 2 effort s shortly before half time with Newtownabbey’s defence losing concentration. H.T 2-1 The second half saw a dramatic event of twists and turns and despite the home side having the majority of the possession, 4TH drew level when a congested penalty area saw the unlucky defender steer the ball into his own net. With very few chances being created by the Carnmoney side, Queens edged themselves in front once more, only for substitute Ian Irvine, who making his debut sent in a pinpoint cross for Donnelly to head home his second of the game. The students surely thought they had finally put the game to bed when the highly impressive centre midfielder ghosted his way through the backline to see his deft chip take the scoreline to 4-3 with little time left on the clock. Remarkably there was time for an equalizer as Trimble rose to head home his 20th goal of the season in the 92nd minute. For the second time, this meeting between the two sides saw the points shared and despite being outplayed for most of the game, again 4TH Newtownabbey’s grit and determination was enough to salvage a precious point away from home. Team:- Dempster, Lane, Cullen, Cochrane, N. Harvey , Macauley , Scourfield, Donnelly, Kennedy, Gilmore, Trimble. Subs:-, M. Harvey, S. McMahon. I.
