Breda Halt 4TH’s Fine Form

4TH A 2-3 Newtownbreda

Having climbed away from the drop zone with a good run of results in 2009, 4Th still are looking over their shoulders as Saturday’s game saw them narrowly beaten by Newtownbreda. With the other scorelines in 2B all going against the Old Boys, they still need several more wins from their remaining 8 fixtures to guarantee survival. Abbey who were missing several key players through suspension and on holidays, never looked like winning the game as Breda were that bit sharper and showed more desire in every department. 4Th did have the visitors on the back foot for the opening stages but against the run of play, the Belfast side raced into a 2 goal lead. Newtownabbey pulled a goal back right before half time, Kennedy dispatching a well placed effort into the bottom corner. H.T 1-2

With the Carnmoney side chasing the game, they again came out of the traps creating several chances, Trimble seeing his header clear the bar from a Gilmore centre. It was Breda who sealed their win though racing away and notching a 3rd to end any hopes of a comeback for Dickson’s side. Ian Irvine who had impressed on his debut in the previous fixture at Queens again came off the bench to score a consolation goal but it was too little to late.

Team:- King, Lane, McCrea, Cochrane, N. Harvey , Macauley , Scourfield, Donnelly, Kennedy, Gilmore, Trimble. Subs:-, M. Harvey, I. Irvine

Kilroot Rec B 2-5 4th B

The Newtownabbey lads had a trip to long-time local rivals Kilroot in what they knew was a must win match, and also wanting to compound some revenge from the previous league outing between the teams going in the favour of Kilroot.

Following the impressive win the previous week against Temple the 4th were feeling in confident mood, however several of the players from the previous week were unavailable for selection for various reasons.

The team however was still a strong B team starting line up and the starting 11 had been regulars throughout the season and they knew only a win would do as they still search for promotion.

The match kicked off then in windy conditions and the 2 teams both had chances in the opening exchanges, notably more to the 4th and a couple to Del Dempster who was filling in up front for the 4th. However the 4th were to rue the missed chances as it was the home team who took a surprise lead after about 20mins when a bit of pin-ball in the Newtownabbey area resulted in the ball being put into the back of the net and was really a sloppy goal to concede.(1-0)

The 4th boys rallied together though and were on level terms after a sweeping cross in from left back Johnny Doak landed perfectly on Rab Murdochs head to get the equaliser.(1-1)

This however didnt dampen the spirit from the Kilroot side as they kept pushing for another goal and had a couple of decent players in the middle of the park who were pulling the strings for the home side. They then went another goal up from an unbelievable goalkeeping error, a Kilroot player had hit a tame shot from the edge of the box that seemed to be trickling towards the Newtownabbey keeper only for it to bobble slightly before he attempted to catch it and then after a bit of juggling dropped it on the foot of the kilroot striker who had rightly followed up after the shot. Even the referee was surprised to hear a Kilroot cheer as he had turned away from the sight of the ball for what looked to be a bread & butter save only to realise then the ball had somehow got into the net.(2-1)

Half time came and the 4th were still on the wrong side of 2-1 scoreline - however the team talk was one of inspiration that let the players know the only thing to do was turn the game around and that they did in the second half.

4th came out very strong in the second half and their class and fitness probably both told as they totally dominated and deservedly got an equaliser from a screamer of a free kick from from about 25 yards out hit by Alan Tumilty. (2-2)

More pressure from the 4th followed and the 4th took the lead from another free kick won by Kennedy out on the wide right position of the penalty area which was very well dispatched by the midfielder Tumilty.(2-3)

They rest of the game was really a formality as the 4th continued to pressure to get more goals. Del again getting a few chances however yet to find the net. The next goal came from an excellent piece of counter attacking football from the 4th. They had just defended a corner where Kilroot had hit the post and McMahon played a short pass to Kennedy just outside the 4th penalty area. Chris carried the ball a few yards and let loose a superb crossfield pass to Dempster who carried into the Kilroot area and laid across for Neil Cahill to rifle into the top right hand corner of the net.(2-4).

This realistically dead and buried the match but not before Del eventually got the goal he deserved that he headed into the net from a trade mark Tumilty long throw.(2-5)

The Newtownabbey boys knew they had been in a game but thankfully got the win they needed and deserved despite a few nervy moments from going behind in the game.

Man of match awarded to Johnny Doak for his solid display.

Team: Scobie, Sean McMahon, Davy McNutt, Ally Weir, Johnny Doak, Chris Kennedy, Alan Tumilty (2), Neil Cahill (1), Ryan Allister, Del Dempster(1), Rab Murdoch(1).

Subs: Andy McCrea, Stevie Brannagh
