4TH Claim 3 Points In Derby

Kilroot Rec 1-3 4th A

With Kilroot trouncing 4TH 3-0 only a few weeks prior to this fixture, the Carnmoney side knew they would have to improve drastically from the dismal performance at home to Newtownbreda in their last outing. With all the teams flirting with relegation picking up points recently, the pressure to stay in the division cranked up and nothing other than a win would ease their fears. Kilroot had their opponents defence under early pressure but the returning Cullen and Gordan were able to deal with such attacks. Abbey had weathered the storm and after King had come to the rescue with some fine saves, Dickson’s men clicked into gear. With Lane, who had been switched to right wing causing problems and Kennedy able to outpace the home full back, chances started to mount. After Trimble had gone close from a Gilmore pass, the deadlock was finally broken when after Kilroot failed to clear a set piece, Lane was able to swivel and put his team 1-0 up. H.T 0-1

The second half saw an onslaught of attacks from the visitors as the Carrick side didn’t recover from going a goal down. As the game opened up, more space was created and from a Kennedy long ball finding Trimble in acres; he was able to round the goalkeeper and double 4TH’s tally. After Cochrane had gone agonisingly close with a couple of 30 yarders, the game was put beyond Kilroot’s reach when Trimble evaded a defenders challenge and rifled home from 20 yards. With the Old Boys defence standing firm and midfielder’s Scourfield and Cochrane dominating the midfield, the game was over however Kilroot were able to notch a consolation. With 7 games to go until the conclusion of 4Th’s return to 2B, this victory over their derby rivals came at a great time and should provide a confidence to push up further in the division.
