Firsts lose, seconds & thirds both win

Queens Grads 2-1 4TH A

Saturday’s fixture saw 4TH Newtownabbey come away from the dub with no points, but a hugely impressive spirited and battling performance against the champions elect will give them a huge boost in finishing the season strongly. Indeed stand in manager McNeilly who was replacing Dickson on the sideline commented after the game, ‘You wouldn’t have known which side was top of the league for most of the game.’ Grads were on the back foot from the first whistle with 4TH playing football easy on the eye, and got their rewards when a move that saw Trimble’s flick on from a Lane cross, land to winger Irvine, who spectacularly volleyed his team into the lead. With several key players missing from the lineup, Abbey were still able to out battle their opponents in every department and were unlucky not to extend their lead a couple of times. Queens managed to haul themselves level with ten minutes to go to half time when the ref played a good advantage to a crisp move that saw an effort creeping past stand in keeper Dempster. H.T 1-1

The second half saw a massive effort displayed by all Newtownabbey players as the Grads did get a grip of the game and put their opponents under a 15 minute spell of pressure. However the visitors were able to defend superbly not letting the home attack create any clear cut opportunities. Newtownabbey almost found themselves in the lead again when Lane fired over, but it was after again some heroic defending, Queens got the breakthrough with ten minutes on the clock when a wayward shot was horribly deflected into the net. The closing stages saw 4TH press for an equalizer, Trimble seeing his lob harshly ruled out for offside, and in the final minute of the game the travelling support thought they had witnessed the leveler, but Macauley’s fine header scraped the post to leave the score 2-1.

Team:- Dempster, Macauley, Cullen, Gordon, N. Harvey , Lane , Scourfield, Kennedy, I. Irvine, Gilmore, Trimble.

Subs:-, Davies, M. Harvey, M. Irvine
