Kirkubbin 5-3 4th A

4TH Old Boys lost their second consecutive match going down 5-3 to Co Down side Kircubbin on Saturday. With injuries, suspensions and other absentees taking its toll, Abbey had an under strength side, however were still able to put up a fight against the tricky coastal side. Dickson’s men couldn’t have got off to a worse start, going 3 down in the first 20 mins. It took the best of half an hour for the visitors to click into gear before they were able to conjure up some chances of their own, Kennedy striking a post and Trimble having a header cleared off the line among the efforts. It was the hosts though that grabbed the killer fourth goal to seemingly end Newtownabbey’s hopes.

The second half almost produced a remarkable comeback from the visitors as they dominated the possession and carved open Kircubbin with ease. With Cullen who was on the bench through injury entering the fray, the defence seemed that bit sturdier, which enabled the full backs to push on and support the attack. The travelling support were given hope when MacAuley’s fine run ended in Ian Irvine finishing. Trimble came close to adding another only for the home custodian to save, but Gordon was able to power home a fantastic header from a MacAuley corner. With the game stretched 4Th could and should have made the most of their attacks; however it was a header from a set play that looped over the stranded keeper Dempster. With time running out, Abbey created some half chances from sub Mark Irvine’s long throws causing problems for the home defence, but it was his brother Ian who notched his 3rd goal in 2 games to register a consolation.
