A's start with good win
4th A 6-1 Dromore Amateurs 4TH Newtownabbey opened up their 2A campaign with a thumping 6-1 win over Dromore Amateurs at a sunny Sixmile in Ballyclare. With 7 players currently unavailable through injury and holidays, manager Dickson was able to make use of the impressive squad as it was significantly strengthened over the summer. There were debuts for left winger David Blair and Steven Nicholl who were without clubs, and left back Christian Hanna, signed from rivals 18TH Newtownabbey. Following a fine pre season over the summer, the Carnmoney side could hardly have got off to a better start as they forced the visitors on to the back foot. Neil Bradbury opened the scoring after the visitors failed to clear a corner. With King’s goal rarely threatened, it was one way traffic and when the lively Gilmore fired in a second after 20 minutes, the game was effectively over. With 4TH playing some delightful football that was easy on the eyes of the large crowd watching, they were carving the Amateurs open with ease. It was from a slick move that included Bradbury, Irvine and Gilmore that set up the returning Harvey to strike an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards. H.T3-0 The 2ND half saw a further onslaught from Newtownabbey, the visitors unable to cope with the pace of Blair, Irvine and co. Though Dromore pulled back a consolation goal at the start, Lane and fellow defenders were comfortable at the back which enabled Bradbury and Trimble to pull the strings in midfield. It was Irvine, who later claimed man of the match that bagged a brace to cap off a fine day for the youngster. The Amateurs had another chance to pull another goal back however their forward skied a penalty after Lane was harshly judged to have fouled in the box. The days scoring was rounded off when Trimble’s glancing header was deflected into the net by a defender. Team:- T. King, S. McMahon, S. Nicholl, A. Lane, C. Hannah, P. Macauley, N. Bradbury, M.
