Santos stun 4th

4TH Newtownabbey were brought back down to earth with a bang on Saturday as they lost heavily away to an impressive Santos side. Despite the scoreline, the outcome could have been different as the visitors had matched the Belfast side throughout the game and had plenty of chances to score. This was the difference however as the hosts were clinical, putting away every one of their 5 chances. The game was evenly balanced when from a free kick, Santos new centre back who previously played at Irish League level rose above Trimble to power a header past King. The Carnmoney Keeper had very little to do as 4TH continued to play neat football, but found himself picking the ball out of the net shortly after when from another set play, the 6ft + defender doubled his and Santos’ tally. Abbey had a chance before half time to pull one back when Gilmore found himself one on one with the host’s custodian from a delightful ball from Bradbury. The striker though saw his effort slide agonizingly wide to leave the half time score 2-0.

The next goal of the game was going to be crucial, and when 4Th started the 2nd half on the front foot, it looked like they were going to be the team to get it. Gilmore again saw a header come close, Irvine and Harris also giving Eugene’s men a fright. But on a breakaway counter attack, Santos all but ended Newtownabbey’s chances of a comeback. Dickson’s deflated side huffed and puffed but the more they pushed forward, cracks started to appear and with 5 minutes before the final whistle, Santos twisted the knife by adding a further 2. As both managers agreed after the game, 5-0 was a harsh result and had 4Th brought their shooting boots, who knows what might have been.

A Junior cup match see’s 4Th hoping to bounce back when they play Claudy Utd at home in next weeks fixture.
