4TH Battle Through to Next Round of Junior Cup
4th A 2-1 Claudy United Claudy Utd were the visitors to 4TH Newtownabbey’s Sixmile pitch in this action packed Junior Cup1st round tie on Saturday. In truth the game wasn’t the greatest of football spectacles, but more a battle of two willing sides eager to progress to the next round. The Amateur League side started the game more brightly with Harvey seeing his close range header clear the bar among the chances. The breakthrough came with 20 minutes gone when Abbey were awarded a free kick after Harris had been felled on the touchline. Lane’s excellently whipped free kick was met by Trimble who rose at the back post to power home a header. 4TH could have extended their lead with several other chances but Claudy had their moments too, and with an injury to Keeper King and roared on by their large travelling support were maybe unlucky not to go into the interval level. H.T 1-0 The early stages of the 2nd half was not good viewing for the 4Th management and fans as Utd immediately had the hosts pinned back in their own box. With a succession of set plays and free kicks, the Carnmoney men were unable to cope with the physical presence and height advantage which lead to a well deserved equalizer. This sparked Newtownabbey’s gaffer into a couple of very wise substitutions, introducing Gordan and Kennedy for a bit of steel and power. The home side had indeed weathered Claudys’s storm and from then on it was all one way traffic. After Gilmore’s header was superbly tipped over and Bradbury also seeing an effort go close, the Northwest Junior side knew it was only a matter of time. The winner came after Macauley had been fouled 25 yards out and again Lane stepped up to take it. This time his shot was spilled by the custodian and Trimble was there to follow it in and slot home his 2nd. The tie could have been won more convincingly when Kennedy who was making his comeback after 6 months out, raced on from a flick on only to see his effort well saved. Trimble also had a penalty shout dismissed but overall a very tough game saw the local side deservedly progress into the 2nd round. Team:- T. King, P. Macauley, S. Nicholl, A. Lane, C. Hannah, , N.
