4Th A see off Service in Cup & C team set a club record
Civil Service II 3-5 4th A 4TH progressed into the second round of the Junior Shield away to Civil Service 2ND’s with a hard fought 5-3 win on Saturday. Admittedly, Service had bolstered their chances by fielding half a dozen first teamers, but despite a game in which both teams struggled to play decent football, 4Th were always in control. In form Irvine put Brian Dickson’s side a goal up with a well controlled shot after the home side’s early dominance. They did however claw themselves deservedly level but their joy was short lived as Trimble latched onto a loose back pass and round the keeper to regain the goal advantage. Newtownabbey continued to press and after Harris saw his free kick go close, it was Irvine who again breached the hosts defense with his pace and from a Trimble pass, coolly slotted home his second. H.T 3-1 Derrick Dempster who was filling in as keeper with King out injured had a sound first half, but found himself picking the ball out of his net ten minutes after the interval to give the home team a glimmer of hope. But any chance of a comeback was dashed as from a Harvey through ball, Trimble was able to chest down the ball and volley home. With the game now effectively over, Trimble was able to complete his hat-trick after a thumping left foot drive from the edge of the box with great play from debutant Graeme Baird. There was time for another consolation for Service but another spirited and battling performance saw 4Th progress in another cup tie. Another plus saw the return of injured Lawson to the A Team fold, who host rivals Grange at Sixmile this Saturday. Team:- D. Dempster, P. MacAuley, M. Gordon, A. Lane, C. Hanna, J. Kennedy, M.
