Derby Day Ends in Draw
4th A 1-1 Grange Rangers Both teams claimed a point in Saturday’s fixture at Sixmile Ballyclare in what was a game that didn’t live up to its expectation. The game was however played in typical derby fashion with plenty of feisty tackles, chances at either end and a sending off. Grange started well and had the first chance of the game when the striker hit the post with a powerful header. That was as close as they would come in the half as Newtownabbey dominated and should have been ahead after several chances from Irvine and Trimble. After Rangers had been reduced to ten men after their skipper was ordered off for two yellows, the hosts had their rivals pinned back creating good chances. Trimble thought he had broken the deadlock only to see his effort superbly tipped wide by the outstanding Loughridge in goals. With the extra man, the Old Boys really should have capitalized and gone on to claim the points, but as in so many times seen before, playing against ten can be difficult, and to Granges credit they came out in the second half attacking and shocked 4TH by scoring a fine breakaway goal. Now 1 up, the Foundary Lane boys sat back and defended very well, reducing Dickson’s men to the odd half chance. When Abbey did manage to breach the rearguard they again found the near impossible task of beating the keeper, Gilmore seeing a point blank snapshot remarkably saved. After 90 unsuccessful minutes of attacking Grange, ‘It looked to be just one of those days’ as Dickson said after. But to 4TH’s credit they kept going and in stoppage time, a through ball from sub Nicholl who had replaced injured Lane found MacAuley, who lashed in a well deserved equalizer to send the home support wild. 4Th will feel they did enough to win this game although it was there for everyone to see that they will need to improve dramatically for a tricky game away to Newtownbreda this Saturday.
