4TH Blown Away at Fourwinds

A nightmare first 20 minutes saw 4TH Newtownabbey slump to a heavy defeat away to Newtownbreda is this 2A fixture at Fourwinds. In what’s usually a close match between the two sides, the match was effectively over before the Old Boys could find their feet. With only ten minutes on the clock, Breda found themselves 3 up with 3 attacks with the visitors defence far from convincing. Indeed 4Th were second to everything in every department and despite having chances to pull goals back through a Harvey header, and a terrific 25 yard drive off the post from Harris, it was the Belfast side who added a 4Th goal. Things didn’t get any better with Trimble having to hobble off with an injury after half an hour and hadn’t King been in fantastic form, the score line could have been double.

With a mountain to climb in the second half, Newtownabbey needed a big performance to pull some pride back, and Manager Brian Dickson’s hairdryer treatment worked a treat as this is what he got. 4Th looked a completely different side and dominated the second period with Harris and Irvine sparking into life. The early pressure paid off when Irvine netted from close range to give Abbey a glimmer of hope. Glen Harris almost got a deserved goal from an audacious volley from 30 yards that narrowly cleared the bar. Irvine claimed his and 4Ths second after a neat move saw the striker power home from a wide angle. The comeback edged ever closer when Dickson’s men were awarded a pen however Irvine struck the bar denying him a hat trick. Gilmore almost set up a frantic finish but his shot was well smothered by the keeper and despite the constant pressure from the visitors, Breda broke away to score and condemn 4Th to their second defeat of the season. Dickson was understandably unhappy with the day’s outcome, although positives were the performance in the 2ND half and a sound debut from Johnny Stirling. F.T 5-2
